Transportation and Roads

Civil War

During the Civil War, Braddock District occupied a critical position between Washington, DC, and Confederate territory. Although no major battles occurred in the District, both sides sought to control the area in order to transport troops and supplies. Rural to Suburban

Places surrounding major cities changed during the twentieth century. Farming communities became bustling suburbs, country roads became highways, large schools replaced one-room schoolhouses, and shopping centers replaced small country stores.
